Wind River Garden
There has been some late rain and fierce wind. Two mature Karree's are leaning over. Flowers are abundant, a lot more pincushions this year.

Working on the trees
This is a river plain, the valley from the end of the Kloof, past Tweede Tol and where Bastiaanskloof Estate starts, is a wide flood plain. The natural flora of reeds and restios has been infected by acres of Wattle, Port Jackson and Rooikrans along the Witte River edges. Mature examples of Brabejum stellatifolium , Wild Almond, can be found here http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantab/brabejstell.htm
Restios thrive here.
The challenge is to find trees that will flourish in the plain. The wind can be fierce, blowing down the valley in Summer and from the North in Winter.
The hardiest tree seems to be the Wit Karee, Searsia pendulina. (Rhus)http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantqrs/searsiapend.htm
Since buying the the property in 2004, I have planted more than 200 trees, but the Karees' have done better then others. Also doing well are Waterbessies, Syzigium cordatum.
